On December 22, 2014, members of the Győr Philharmonic Orchestra have boarded a plane to a faraway corner of the world, China, to fulfill an invitation from a Shanghai-based cultural program organizing agency.

During the two-week-long tour Győr Philharmonic Orchestra has given a total of eight concerts in world-famous concert halls like the Poly Theater in Beijing, or the Oriental Center in Shanghai. Other cities included Heyuan, Foshan, and Suzhou. Every concert was played in front of a packed house where apart from the classical and the Hungarian pieces people could enjoy several genuinely Chinese melodies as well. Considering the orchestra’s hectic pre-Xmas workload it had been no easy task to find time for two strenuous rehearsals a day in preparation for the tour. Artistic director Kálmán Berkes made no compromises to achieve peak-performances with Győr Philharmonic Orchestra at each station of the tour.

Soloist at the Chinese concerts was Hungarian soprano Viktória Varga, guest artist of the Viennese State Opera.

The orchestra is due to arrive back to Hungary on January 6 but we can already tell that this tour is only going further benefit Győr Philharmonic Orchestra’s solid reputation in the country and internationally alike.
Look out for further reports on the Chinese tour at a later stage!
