Richard Strauss marathon
Program:
R. Strauss: Don Quixote, op. 35
The Győr Philharmonic Orchestra, conducted by Martin Rajna.
The so-called "marathon concerts", presented since 2008 by the Palace of Arts (MÜPA) in accociation with the Budapest Festival Orchestra (BFO), regularly focuses on the best works of a great composer by playing them from the morning until night time. These all-day long set of concerts are held at both the Béla Bartók Concert Hall and the Festival Theater. Tschaikowsky, Dvořák, Beethoven, Schubert, Mozart, Bartók, Bach, Stravinsky, Mendelssohn-Bartholdy and Schumann, Brahms, Bernstein and the American music, Debussy and Ravel, have already had their turns through the years. Last but not least, due to the Corona virus situation, a grand selection of Franz Liszt and Hector Berlioz's music was performed online all day long. The new chapter of this unparalleled initiative is coming up on January 22, 2022, highlighting pieces by Richard Strauss. His monumental musical career spans many decades from the second half of the 19th century all the way until 1940's. His challenging operas and symphonic poems had greatly impacted 20th century composers, including the young Béla Bartók. The performers of the Richard Strauss marathon are some of Hungary's greatest instrumentalists, and vocalists. The lineup includes chamber music formations, reputable soloists, and orchestras. Incidentally, students of the Liszt Music Academy welcome their listeners at the Glass Room of the building for free-of-charge concerts while educational talks on the subject will be projected on the canvas in the Conference Room.
