THE 2015/16 JÁNOS RICHTER CONCERT SERIES IS ABOUT TO BEGIN!
Traditionally, the Győr Philharmonic Orchestra’s János Richter Concert Series kicks off every year on October 1, the International Day of Music. This year is no exception. The concert is again conducted by the orchestra’s artistic director, Kálmán Berkes. This time the program contains works by Bach, Brahms, and Bartók, featuring the orchestra’s own artists.
The series consists of five performances, one of them being conducted by Greek conductor Michalis Economu, well-known to the Győr audience for recently conducting GYPO at the opera gala called „Operalia” on Szechenyi square. Incidentally, this program includes two pieces that had its world premier conducted by the Győr-born, world famous János Richter, after whom our concert hall has been named. Also, maestro Gilbert Varga, son of another Győr-born celebrity, Tibor Varga, will make his return to Richter Hall appearing with the young Russian winner of the International Tibor Varga Violin Competition of Sion, Dmitry Smirnov. Also, do come along to the concert subtitled „Maestro” where the great two-time Kossuth-prize winner Zoltán Kocsis will play and conduct at the same time! Concluding the series is a real treat is store for all interested parties. World-renown tenor and conductor José Cura is scheduled to conduct a young, international cast in Verdi’s classic opera „Otello” in the Audi Arena of Győr commemorating the 400th anniversary of playwright William Shakespeare’s death. You will certainly get your money’s worth that night!
